I grew up in Los Angeles and started playing trumpet at the age of ten. I studied privately under Manny Stevens, who was lead studio player for CBS-TV in LA and then joined Chuck Barris to become the musical coordinator and trumpet player on 'The Gong Show'. In fact, I play one of his old trumpets. He went under contract to an instrument manufacturer (Olds I think) and sold me his custom built Bach Strad (37 lightweight) which I have played for the last 20+ years.

My company (software ;-) has a russian branch and I visit Moscow about once a month. I am a bass trombonist in my spare time ... and by chance I found near the former KGB a musik shop selling tubas. I bought one as I always dreamed to get such instrument (they are very expensive in Germany - the cheapest more than 6000DM). I handcarried it into the plane - some fight with the Delta cabin crew but I managed to get it to Germany. The only problem was that I told friends about this instrument - they asked me to buy one more for them - and then the friends of the friends ... and after about 5 struggles with the cabin crew, one broken instrument (the insisted on checking it !) I decided to buy a complete truck of tubas and to start (not for money but mainly for fun and to help other peoples who want to play tuba but dont have so much money) "die Tuba". The russian branch organized all paper work and I got about 200 Tubas.
